On the workbench - finishing the tower

The last couple of evenings have seen my Napoleonic signal tower completed.  Here are the last few steps.  Firstly I've added coarse sand around the edges of the base and the tower and plastered the tower itself with tile grout (except in the places where the stones are showing through:


Next the bare stone surfaces get painted with textured masonry paint:



When the tile grout was dry I painted it in random splurges of various shades of brown, cream and pink:


The next stage was to apply progressively paler coats of dry brushing over the top and then to paint in the remaining details.  Sorry, no pics of that final intermediate stage; I thought I'd taken some but apparently not.

    That's a really neat way of adding some color texture to the building (undercoating with different colors and then dry-brushing over it). I'm going to steal that technique! (Dang, and I just finished some mid-east buildings -- that would have been great to use with them)

    Thanks Nicholas. I can't claim credit; I stole the idea from Richard Clark. Don't know where he stole it from.

    I'm considering going back and redoing an Italian house using this technique.
